If you’ve been researching a tummy tuck, cost and recovery are probably your top questions. As a board-certified, Seattle-based Plastic Surgeon, I believe transparency builds trust. Let’s break down what your tummy tuck investment includes, how the recovery unfolds, and what long-term care looks like.

What’s Included in the Cost

Reviewing a plastic surgery quote can feel overwhelming when you look at the bottom line. When reviewing quotes, its important to focus on what’s included in that cost, and the overall value that it brings to your experience, your safety and your results. Cutting corners when it comes to surgery can lead to devastating AND costly outcomes. A true all-inclusive quote should cover:

Surgeon’s Fee: Planning, surgery, and all necessary follow-up visits.

Facility Fee: Accredited operating room, staff, and equipment.

Anesthesia Fee: Board-certified anesthesia provider for your comfort and safety.

Equipment & Supplies: Drains, compression binder, and post-operative garments.

Follow-Up Visits: Unlimited visits during your recovery for reassurance and professional care.

If a quote seems unusually low, you have to ask what’s missing. Does their surgery center lack accreditation (a state and nationwide metric of safety standards? Do they substitute Nurse Anesthetists for Board Certified Anesthesiologist? Do they not include the appropriate follow up appointments needed to get you healed and back to normal life? There's usually a catch somewhere if it seems to good to be true.

Recovery Timeline

One of the biggest hindrances that patients face when deciding to move forward with a tummy tuck is the recovery. And for good reason. Planning your recovery is a critical part of planning your surgery, especially if you have young children at home. Surgery itself only takes a few hours while your recovery will take weeks to months.

Days 1–7: Expect tightness, swelling, and discomfort. You’ll walk starting the day of surgery, wear your binder, and manage surgical drains. You will do A LOT of resting during this period so have a list of shows/movies/books/podcasts ready! Most patients will need assistance getting in and out of bed for the first few days, as well as assistance showering. Most patients will utilize stronger pain medication for only the first few days after surgery. Typically around day three or four, they will start to wean off stronger pain medications and replace it with over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen.

Weeks 1-3:

Your swelling will start to subside and you will start to feel more mobile. You still may need assistance with tasks like opening heavy doors, etc. During this time, complications like infections, fluid collections and healing issues may begin to pop up (so make sure to check in with your surgeon for any concerns). Typically during this time, pain becomes manageable with just over-the-counter medications but fatigue is still prominent--rest while you can! Most plastic surgery patients take 2 weeks off work for a tummy tuck, so during this time the transition back to work will happen. My best advice for this time? Take it slow, don't over extend yourself, and rest when you can.

By week three, I typically will have patients begin a scar care routine. While there are many (and I mean many) options available for scar care, the three main pillars are moisture, massage and sun protection for the first year. I typically recommend silicone-based products for patients, though things like Mederma and Bio Oil are also commonly used. My personal belief is that it is less about what you use on your scars and more about consistency. Remember, it takes an entire year!

Weeks 4–6:

This is the period when you get those glimmers of being back to normal. Restrictions are lifted, you are getting back into a normal routine in your new body, and listening to your body becomes a critical guiding factor for what to do and when. Exercise will begin with light movement and stretching, and slowely build back to your routine over the course of the next few weeks. You still may notice fatigue so, once again, rest while you can. As you begin moving your body more, you may note fluctuations in your swelling throughout the day. Compression garments are an important aspect of this part of your healing.

Months 3–6: Final contour refines and scars begin to soften. It's important to remember that your body doesn't work on your timeline, it has it's own. Typical scar remodelling can take 1+ years (yes, you read that right!) and swelling may be present for upwards of 6 months after surgery. During this period, focus on what you can control (not what you cannot)-- good scar care, getting back into a normal routine, and maintaining your results.

Most surgeons will continue to ask patients to wear compression garments during this time period, as normal postoperative swelling can linger for months after surgery. If you are still noticing some stubborn swelling in areas like the lower abdomen, a great option at this point in your healing is lymphatic massage to help mobilize fluid.

Month 9-12: This is when your final outcome is taking shape, both from a contour perspective and from a scar perspective. You will begin to notice that your scars really begin fading at this point. Your nerves will likely be up and running at this point, but it's important to remember that we give nerves a fully 2 years to return back to normal.

Many women considering a tummy tuck are most nervous about the recovery time line. While most patients are surprised by how easy a plastic surgery recovery is, it's important to always give yourself ample time to recover and PLAN AHEAD! The best scenario is to plan for the worst, hope for the best, and find yourself pleasantly surprised at the ease of your recovery.
